Sciatica and Back Pain – An Explanation of Pain, Its Origins and …

The purpose of this article is to delve into the phenomenon of back pain, particularly as it relates to sciatica – or sciatic nerve pain. We will attempt to examine pain, in its various guises and manifestations, followed by a discussion of the more common consequences associated with it. Back pain, and with it sciatica, is one of the most common forms of pain affecting our society today, it particularly impacts men after the age of thirty and women during pregnancy and after menopause.

While etiology, or cause, differs significantly between men and women, symptoms may be, and often are, remarkably similar. When we speak of back pain and sciatic nerve pain, the latter known as sciatica, we describe it in various ways depending on the level and duration of the event. Pain, particularly back and leg pain (i.e, sciatica) is, very often, situational; and, is dependent on the time of day, level of activity, underlying pathology, whether disease or trauma, and even the weather. In fact, there are a myriad of reasons for pain, in all its manifestations.

Pain can be short-term and sharp, meaning acute; or, it may be dull, throbbing and last a long time, as in chronic pain. Back pain and sciatic nerve pain may also be a combination of sensations, as in acute/chronic back pain or dull/chronic sciatic nerve pain. Everyone who has experienced back pain and sciatica knows there are as many forms and levels of pain as there are days in the year, probably more! How many sciatica sufferers first described their pain as a "muscle pull?" Or back pain as "stabbing?"Pain is usually defined as any unpleasant emotional, sensory, and physiological experience associated with real (i. e. actual) or potential tissue damage. Pain is caused by an activation of a pain receptor, best described as a weed-like nerve ending with overlapping branches from the receptors below it and above it.

These overlapping branches are like bunches of wires, all triggering or firing electrical impulses, messages, that are then carried and conveyed to and along the central nervous system to its terminal, the brain. Once the impulse reaches the brain, we sense pain, whether a throbbing sensation in the side, above the iliac crest or hip bone. . . or an aching, pulling sensation down the back of the leg, as in sciatica. The pathway to the brain is often what practitioners, from various disciplines, will focus on as they attempt to "interrupt" the pain "message" flow, stopping the pain and thus providing temporary relief. There are two types of fibers conducting pain impulses and two kinds of pain resulting from the initiation of these fibers. The manifestation of pain is along a continuum, depending on the type of fibers activated, how many fibers are stimulated, and how many of each kind of fibers continue firing. Basically, A fibers are rapid conducting (sharp or acute) and C, delta fibers, are slow conducting (dull or throbbing). Epicritc pain is pain originating from a specific area of the skin, usually referred to as a dermatome. Protopathic pain is deep, visceral and somatic pain, usually conducted through more diffuse pathways in the body, thus causing a generalized, poorly localized pain, like an aching back or a throbbing lower leg (sciatica).

The pain, once again, is deeper and harder to pinpoint but there is no doubt about it being there. Additionally, there are two pathways we are interested in as they pertain to back pain and sciatica. The first are spinothalamic tracts and these are the main pain conducting pathways in the spinal cord. The other type of pathway is of a more diffuse nature but still passes through various segments of the sympathetic ganglia (e. g. , branches or bundles of nerves in part of the sympathetic nervous system) to the thalamus and cerebral cortex, this is called reticulospinal tract. The two tracts in concert provide the necessary infrastructure for pain impulses to reach the brain, and for us to react to that pain. Pain stimuli, whether for back pain or sciatica, may indicate an obvious, specific injury or event. Or, the injury or underlying pathology may be unknown. The stimuli itself, or themselves in the case of multiple stimuli or events, cause a specific pain sensation. In the case of back pain, the sensations can be anything from a dull ache to an acute, stabbing pain; and, the same is true of sciatica. Once again, all is dependent on where on the pain continuum the stimuli falls and what fibers are being activated. Of course, everything is dependent on how the central nervous system responds to a given set of stimuli, and stimuli vary in their effectiveness and responsiveness according to the changes in the response of the central nervous system.

Ultimately, back pain and sciatica may lead to impairment, functional limitations, and even disability. The impairment may mean an abnormality or loss of a given function whether it is psychological or physiological. It may also mean the loss of an anatomical function or structural failure, such as foot drop or numbness. A functional limitation due to back pain and/or sciatica may involve the inability to partially or completely perform an activity once thought of as second nature, like bending over and tying your shoes, taking the dog for a walk around the block or picking up your children or grandchildren. The inability to perform certain functions may have a carryover effect, causing real psychological pain due to the failure to integrate activity in one’s life when back and leg pain becomes a limiting factor. Finally, disability becomes reality.

The limitations in the life of the back pain or sciatica sufferer become so pervasive due to the pain it limits, and in fact prevents, the fulfillment of normal life functions. Back pain and sciatic nerve pain or sciatica is a psychological, physiological, and anatomical phenomenon causing anything from mild, temporary discomfort to acute and chronic pain leading to an entire collapse of the normal, day-to-day activities of the individual suffering from it. Back pain and sciatica can progress from minor impairment to total disability and loss of identity if not diagnosed and treated properly. The long-term effects can be life altering if the pain is not dealt with quickly and intelligently. Whether the individual is in the beginning stages of the pain continuum or has progressed to a full blown disability, there is help available. The question becomes, "How to stop the sciatica and back pain" and, more importantly, "How long are you going to let it go before you do something about it?" The decision is up to the individual, the time to act it always now.

Acupuncture is understood to be painful but its a myth. While done with an expert, it yields painless yet fruitful results.

As it is already established that yoga can heal any pain, but it is helpful as sciatic nerve damage treatment only if you keep it within the limits of your pain enduring capability. Overdoing it can aggravate the condition.

Most people who realize that the injections doctor is giving to them aren’t the best solution start looking for other methods of sciatica pain relief they can apply at home! I want to show you some great methods anyone can do to relieve the sciatica pain quickly and without a lot of efforts!

Pain killers are the usual medications you’ll receive from your doctor, but they are ineffective in the long run because they don’t help you with the problem, they just help you to ease the pain. But there are something you can take for a cure – anti inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen. You don’t need a prescription to buy them and they will help you very fast if the pain caused by inflamed sciatic nerve!

Massage is excellent to loosen the tensed muscles around the sciatic nerve and relieve the pain. It has to be done every day at least once for the buttocks muscles and also the big muscle in the back of the leg called hamstring!

Yoga – there are a lot of researches that say yoga is one of the best ways to cure and also prevent back pain and sciatica. It helps you to stretch the leg muscles and strength the lower back muscles. The best thing about it is it can be done at home and it’s also fun and doesn’t take a lot of effort. All you need is a yoga belt and a little carpet. It’s important for you to stick with it if you want to see results, because unlike drugs, it’s a long term method for sciatica pain relief!

All these methods work great and promise you a quick pain relief but unfortunately they won’t cure you and nobody can promise you that the sciatica won’t strike again in a week or even a day. The good news is that it’s more then possible to cure sciatica and not suffer from it again!

Cure My Sciatica

Are you suffering from severe sciatica? Are you looking for cures for sciatica? Do you know what causes sciatica? After years of suffering from severe lower back pain that would run down my butt and the back of my legs and sometimes, all the way to my toes, I began to search for what was causing the severe lower back pain and discovered it was due to a pinched sciatic nerve and the pain was referred to as sciatica.
So, I began asking my self is there a cure for my sciatica? The simple answer I found was no there is no real cure for sciatica but, once you understand exactly what sciatica is, and what causes it, you can then take steps to relieve the pain and with the right exercises can keep it from returning.

Since I can’t cure my sciatica let us take a look at what causes sciatica and ways to relieve the pain and some exercises, we can do to keep it from returning. First of all, the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body, it begins at the lower part of the spinal cord extends outward through the vertebrae and discs in your back, runs down your buttock and legs all the way to your toes. When this nerve becomes damaged for any reason it becomes inflamed and this is what causes sever lower back pain that can run down your butt and legs and if damaged severely enough can even cause pain or numbness in the toes.

To cure my sciatica I need to know what caused the damage to the nerve in the first place here are some of the things that can damage the nerve and cause inflammation:

lifting heavy objects with the back instead of bending at the knees

a misaligned spine (caused by weak back muscles)

herniated or a ruptured disc

damage to the Piriformis muscle (this is a narrow muscle that begins at the lower spine and crosses the buttock and connects to the thigh bone, spasms, swelling or tightness of this muscle will put pressure on the sciatic nerve causing pain)

spinal tumors growing on the spine in the area of the sciatic nerve (again placing pressure on the nerve causing pain)

Sciatica can be felt as a burning pain, it can feel like pins or needles, and can shoot down your legs like a jolt of electricity, it can also be the sensation of numbness. No matter what the pain feels like it always best to get an opinion from a qualified medical professional to be sure that it is actually the sciatic nerve that is causing the pain. Once I am sure what the cause of pain is then I would look for ways to cure my sciatica.

This is what I do to cure my sciatica when I begin to feel lower back pain, first I begin with an ice pack on the lower back in the area where the pain is most severe, twenty minuets every two hours or so, and I always make sure there is some type of cloth between the ice pack and my skin so as not to damage the skin. I do this for about two days until the pain is bearable then start with what is known as the MacKenzie Method, these are exercises designed to stretch or extend the back with backward bending of the back. These exercises, centralize the pain in the low back, once centralized, the sciatic nerve will begin to heal, and eventual stop hurting. Continuing these exercises after the pain has left is the way I cure my sciatica and keep it from returning.

Sciatica is a very common condition that plagues millions of people in our modern world. There are a variety of causes of sciatic pain, ranging from poor posture, excessive time seated in front of a computer, and even inadequate nutrition.

Treatment for sciatica can be challenging, as the pain often stems from long-term, chronic degeneration in the spinal column between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae. Before considering surgery, I recommend pursuing treatments such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and physical therapy.

Perhaps even before pursuing these routes, I would consider undertaking a regimen of sciatic nerve stretches that will help to alleviate the pain and can in some situations offer long-standing resolution.

Below is a description of one of my favorite sciatic nerve stretches. This is a yoga pose traditionally called prasarita.

Stand straight up, and bring your feet about 3-4 feet apart depending on your height (greater distance if taller). Parallel the insides of the feet and flex the quadriceps muscles above the knees. Take a deep breath in, suck in the lower abdomen to engage your core muscles, and exhale, bending at the waist keeping a long spine.

Bend all the way down until you start to feel a slight pull in your hamstrings and the outsides of the legs. You may only bend slightly at first as your legs will likely be tight if you have chronic sciatic pain. Do not force it or go deeper than feels comfortable. Now, relax your neck and look down at the ground. You can rest your hands on the knees, shins, or outside of the feet – wherever it feels natural. The goal of the pose is to rest the crown of your head on the floor right in front of you.Maintain the pose for 10 deep, slow breaths and then, bending at the waist, inhale and slowly rise back up.

This is an excellent pose to gently stretch the sciatic nerve and encourage blood flow throughout the lower extremities. I recommend doing this pose 2-3 times a day when you are not in an active flare up of pain. It should be used more for prevention.

I have seen the regular practice of this pose go a long ways toward healing chronic sciatic pain.

Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment – Sciatica Disturbing Sleep – The …

One of the most peaceful times of day is when we turn in for a night of rest and relaxation, but when you have sciatica, it can feel almost impossible to get a good nights sleep. Here we will discuss some of your options.

Why does my sciatica disturb my sleep?

Sleep is the only time when we can wreak havoc on our posture and not know it. For instance, if you sleep on your side you may go to sleep feeling great, but over the course of the night the weight of your body being pulled to one side may pull on your back. The result is waking up in severe pain. One of the most important elements of sciatic nerve treatment is your posture. Keeping your back aligned is a crucial part of keeping the pressure off of your sciatic nerve. This is why it is very important for you to maintain your posture while you sleep.

What does my pillow have to do with my Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment?

Most pillows are not designed with the full scope of the body in mind. Sciatica is tricky, even if you feel that your body is perfectly straight, something as simple as having your neck angled too high can disrupt the top of the spine, which disrupts the middle of the spine, and so on and so forth.

What should I look for in a pillow for Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment?

One of the main things to relieve your issue of sciatica disturbing sleep is the right pillow, You want to find one that allows your neck to be perfectly lined up with the rest of your body. Just as it is important not to have a pillow that angles the neck too high, it is also important not to have a pillow that pulls the head down too low. This will also cause a pull in the neck and any disruption in the neck can easily affect other areas of the spine.

What is the best pillow for sciatic nerve sleep relief?

Although I have never tried one myself, many people I have talked to swear by using a Buckwheat pillow. They say that it supports the neck in such a way that it gives the rest of the body good posture. The hulls inside the pillow are made to cradle the neck without being intrusive and I have been told by other sciatica sufferers that it is very comfortable and they have all had great success sleeping with it.

Do I have any other options?

My husband, (the sciatic sufferer in my house), purchased a Memory Foam pillow about two years ago and he loves it. For him, it is comfortable enough to get a good nights sleep while firm enough to give his neck the support it needs to maintain his posture. You also have options with the memory foam. One side is flat if that gives you enough support. But if you need additional neck support, the other side has a small round part of it that lifts the neck while supporting the head and is very comfortable, (this also works great with headaches).

Author: Sarah Neve

It’s no secret that I think Sciatica stinks. If you are reading this, chances are you do too. The pain can be a debilitating monster of a beast. More often than not the doctor’s advice is painful, pricey, or altogether useless, (‘Alternate heat and ice?’ Sure am glad I wasted my latte money on that stellar piece of advice).

The best thing for you to do is get some type of medical and homeopathic plan in place to treat your sciatic nerve pain. In the meantime, we have plenty of Free Tips for Sciatic Relief to get you started today.

Most sciatica sufferers do things every day that will lead to a sciatic flare. Obviously not on purpose, but the facts are this, the wrong foods, the wrong exercises, even the wrong sitting position all contribute to a flare. You can take control of your sciatic nerve pain. You can get your life back without drugs or painful treatments. In fact, you can do at home in only 8 minutes a day, guaranteed.

A Guide to Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief

Our body is a collection of systems. Systems are a collection of organs. Organs are collection of tissues. Tissues are collection of cells. One system that composes our body is the nervous system. The nervous system includes the nerve that supplies the sensory and motor output on the distal parts of our body.

Sciatica nerve comes from a collection of spinal roots on the sacral plexus. While it comes from the sacral area, it supplies the lower leg. Thus, it will definitely go through a pathway that will cross a lot of structures. This is where pain usually starts. Sciatic nerve pain relief is done by targeting the structures that causes the pain. Sciatic nerve pain or commonly known as sciatica, is not a disease entity in itself. It is caused by various conditions that lead to compression of the sciatic nerve. As mentioned, it comes from the sacral area. From its roots to its terminal end, there is a possibility of impingement. It may be caused by improper body posture. Thus the position of the spine may be one of the causes of the pain. Sciatica pain relief usually involves instruction on proper body mechanics. Sometimes, a muscle where the sciatic nerve will pass is the one that causes compression. If it is not severe, it may be treated conservatively. In severe cases, the doctor will recommend surgery.

Author: Chaves Angles

Sciatica pain relief will depend on the cause of pain. Once the cause is known, then cure will be determined. In some rare cases, surgery is needed as permanent solution.

Sciatica Pain Relief – 3 Methods For Fast Sciatica Pain Relief!

It’s common to think that sciatica is a disease but in fact it’s a condition caused by a herniated disc in the lower back, sciatic nerve inflammation or when it’s under strong pressure. There are a lot of medical treatments for sciatica pain relief but here I am going to share with you few methods that you don’t need a doctor to apply! Ready to get rid of sciatica? Let’s go…

The first things you have to do is to change a little bit your sleeping and sitting habits. The mattress you use right now is probably very comfortable but for fast sciatica pain relief you’ll have to start sleeping on a firm and a little hard surface. I really suggest you to put something flat under the shits and cover it with something soft. Sleep on your back and in few days you’ll feel a serious pain relief.

Exercises – they are great for sciatica pain relief and for preventing sciatica in the future. In the beginning you want to start with the stretches for the buttocks muscles, you’ll find tons of them online. Perform them 3-4 times a day to loose the muscles that put pressure on the sciatic nerve. After a few days when the pain will be gone, you can start with strength exercises for your lower back to prevent the sciatica in the future!

Ice compress packs work great and they are very easy to make. The bad news are that it won’t cure you but they are great for a quick sciatica pain relief! Just take some ice or even frozen vegetables and apply it on the back. By doing it 2-3 times a day you will ease the pain after 2 days maximum. But as I said – it’s not a cure so don’t expect too much out of it!

All these methods work great and promise you a quick pain relief but unfortunately they won’t cure you and nobody can promise you that the sciatica won’t strike again in a week or even a day. The good news are that it’s more then possible to cure sciatica and not suffer from it again!

What Is Causing My Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain is one of the leading reasons people in the United States visit their doctors. It will inhibit the lives of millions of Americans this year. In fact, an average four out of five adults will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. So the question, "What is causing my lower back pain?" is not uncommon.

Lower back pain can be excruciating. It can be caused by a large variety of injuries or conditions, such as:

* lower back muscles may be strained

* discs between the vertebrae may be injured

* large nerve roots extending to arms and legs may be irritated

* smaller nerves that supply the lower back spine may be irritated

* joints, ligaments, or even bones may be injured

When lower back pain occurs with other symptoms such as fever and chills, a serious medical condition may be present. You should see a doctor immediately.

Three categories of lower back pain

Your lower back pain will fall into one of three categories, which your doctor bases on your description of the pain.

1. Axial lower back pain – mechanical or simple back pain

2. Radicular lower back pain – sciatica

3. Lower back pain with referred pain

1. Axial Lower Back Pain

Axial lower back pain is the most common of the three. It is felt only in the lower back area with no pain radiating to other parts of the body. It is sometimes called mechanical back pain or simple back pain.

* Description: Axial lower back pain can vary greatly. It may be sharp or dull, constant or intermittent. On a scale of 1 to 10, you may rate its intensity #1 or a full #10. It may increase with certain activity – when playing tennis, for example. It may worsen in certain positions – such as sitting at a desk. It may or may not be relieved by rest.

* Diagnosis: Axial lower back pain might be diagnosed by you rather than your physician. You know it started when you were helping a friend move a heavy couch. On the other hand, it may be your doctor who determines that you have strained or otherwise damaged back muscles, have a degenerated disc, etc.

* Treatment: The cause of your axial lower back pain does not matter when it comes to treatment. You will want to rest for a day or two. Follow this by gentle back pain exercises and stretching. If you have more pain after exercise, use a heating pad on low or medium setting. Take an appropriate over-the-counter pain medication. Follow your doctor’s advice.

* Prognosis: Symptoms of axial lower back pain disappear with time, and about 90% of patients recover within four to six weeks. If you do not feel better within six to eight weeks, additional testing and/or injections may be needed to diagnose and treat the source of the pain.

* Caution: If your pain is chronic, or so severe that it awakens you during the night, see your doctor.

2. Radicular Lower Back Pain

Radicular lower back pain is commonly referred to as sciatica. It is felt in the lower back area, thighs, and legs.

* Description: Radicular lower back pain often begins in the lower back, and then follows a specific nerve path into the thighs and legs. Your leg pain may be much worse than your back pain. It is often deep and steady. It may readily be reproduced with certain activities and positions, such as sitting or walking.

* Diagnosis: Radicular lower back pain is caused by compression of the lower spinal nerve. The most common cause is a herniated disc with compression of the nerve. Other causes might be diabetes or injury to the nerve root. If you had previous back surgery, scar tissue may be affecting the nerve root. Elderly adults may have a narrowing of the hole through which the spinal nerve exits.

* Treatment: Conservative treatment is the best place to begin. Rest for a few days in a bed or chair. Follow this by gradual introduction of gentle exercises specifically for back pain relief. Follow your exercise with additional rest, applying a heating pad on low to medium setting. Soak daily in Epsom salts baths. Take an appropriate over-the-counter pain medication. Your doctor may want to use selective spinal injections.

* Prognosis: Symptoms of radicular low back pain may decrease with the conservative treatment outlined above. Give your back and legs six to eight weeks to improve. If surgery is needed after that, it typically provides relief of the leg pain for 85% to 90% of patients. The back pain itself is more difficult to relieve.

* Caution: If an MRI or CT-myelogram does not definitely confirm nerve compression, back surgery is unlikely to be successful.

3. Lower Back Pain with Referred Pain

Lower back pain with referred pain is not as common as axial or radicular back pain. This pain, which does not radiate down the thighs and legs, may be caused by the same conditions that cause axial lower back pain.

* Description: You will usually feel referred pain in the low back area, radiating into your groin, buttocks, and upper thigh. The pain may move around, but it will rarely go below your knee. It often is an achy, dull pain. It tends to come and go. Sometimes it is very sharp, but other times it is only a dull sensation. It can be caused by the identical injury or problem that causes simple axial back pain. Often, it is no more serious.

* Diagnosis: It is very important to have a physician determine whether your pain is lower back pain with referred pain or radicular lower back pain, since the treatment varies considerably.

* Treatment: Once you know for sure that yours is lower back pain with referred pain, you can follow the treatment for axial lower back pain.

* Prognosis: Symptoms of lower back pain with referred pain disappear with time, usually within four to six weeks. If you do not feel better within six to eight weeks, ask your physician if additional testing and/or injections are needed.

* Caution: If your lower back pain is chronic, or so severe it awakens you during the night, you should see your doctor.
